Shrubs removal on xerothermic grasslands
For many years within the framework of active protection of xerothermic grasslands, we have been carrying out in Owczary the actions of cutting down the overgrowth of trees and bushes. These are necessary operations for preservation of open, semi-natural ecosystems of grasslands, which are strongly endangered as a result of changes that have taken place in agriculture in recent decades. The most severe threat to grasslands is the abandonment of extensive grazing and the resulting natural succession, afforestation, ploughing and conversion to arable land. Other negative processes are eutrophication of grasslands and encroachment of alien species, associated with negative changes in abiotic conditions. Logging is one of the first steps in protecting these ecosystems.
